CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Finland / Timo Väinämöinen
CANON: Axis Powers Hetalia
CANON REFERENCE: http://hetalia.wikinet.org/wiki/Finland
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Student, grade 11? I’m unfamiliar with the American system, so correct me if I’m wrong.

APPEARANCE: Timo is a bit on the short side, at 170cm, with round features. Even at 17, it looks like he’s yet to hit the main onslaught of puberty; he still has puppy fat on his cheeks, and he’s shorter than his peers. Most people assume that he’s a good few years younger than he is, even though he can act much older. He has a cheerful face, which is dominated by his big, unnaturally purple eyes, the only outward sign of his mutations. His hair is a light blonde, and it’s fairly long, falling to about his ears. Generally he can be said to dress like an old man, in worn dress trousers, plain shirts and knitted jumpers, all second hand in some form or another or hand knitted by his mum. His beret, which he wears more often than not outside, was a good luck charm from his granddad when he left for the institute, and the one new thing he does own is a silver cross, given to him by Björn that he wears always, though he normally tucks it under his shirt.

PERSONALITY: There’s no denying that Timo is cute, and he looks younger than he is which doesn’t help. He’s always smiling and happy, despite the fact that it’s been said that he’s had hardest life of all his friends, and he’s always there to help those around him. He’s joking and talkative around his friends, but especially around those who unnerve him, like Björn, babbling a little to hide his nervousness. Sometimes he speaks without really thinking about it. He treats everyone with the same love and respect, no matter who or what they are, with no change for gender, sexuality, race, or religion. He will talk to anyone and does his best to make everyone feel happy.

Timo likes to have a large group of friends around him and he will do his best to stay close to all of them, remembering little details and always there to lend a hand or a listening ear. He’s honest, trusting and loyal and he values these attributes in other people too. In a way, he’s naïve, despite his experience of the world, in that he will always assume the best of people. He’s simplistic, as well, savouring the little things in life. He loves his friends and his little family, and he gets a lot of joy from giving presents to as many people as possible at Christmas.

Surprisingly, he’s stronger than he looks, both in mind and in body. He was capable of withstanding impressive temperatures in the saunas before his powers developed, and physically he’s used to doing all the heavy lifting around the house, so there’s a solid layer of muscle under his puppy fat. Protective of his friends and family, one of the few ways to get on his bad books is to hurt them. He’s a hard worker and very determined, and if hard work could solve all problems then he’d have none. Once he starts a project, Timo will work and work until he is satisfied with it, and he’ll take things a little bit too seriously too, going far over board with costume parties or dares.

Timo is also a big sucker for anything cute, like moomins and children. He has an artistic streak, and he’s always doodling cute little figures in his notebooks. He enjoys family life and prefers to be kept busy. He’s also a big fan of sports, skiing and ice hockey in particular. He can get a little too competitive when it comes to them – you don’t want to be the opposing side to his hockey team.

POWERS/ABILITIES: By holding his hands out in front of himself, Timo can manifest and fire bullets of ice. With concentration and practice he’ll be able to manipulate the size and hardness of the ice, ranging from about the size of this o, to just under the size of a fist, and from soft enough to melt on contact, to hard enough to break skin. The bigger the bullet, the harder it will be to make it harder, to the point where most large bullets will be more like well packed snowballs than an actual bullet. He has to manifest the bullet before he can fire it, so it depends on the size as to how many he can shoot in a minute. The smallest size he can shoot about 30/minute, and the largest size 1/minute, but it’ll take practice to achieve this.

Like with a real gun, there’s kickback from firing, the harder and larger the bullet, the more kickback, to the point where he could potentially dislocate his shoulder if he went past his limits. There’s also a limit in range, though this is something else that practice will reduce. The maximum range that he’ll ever be about to achieve is about 250m. His aim is entirely down to human skill, but as he has a good eye to begin with it won’t be that much of an issue for him (though with practice, again, he will get better). Obviously, the further he’s aiming for, the worse his aim will get. Manifesting bullets is physically and mentally tiring, so that he wouldn’t be able to maintain his maximum/minute for more than five minutes in a row, no matter how much training he does. It won’t take him too long to recover, though (as long as he doesn’t injure himself with the kickback), so that he could probably manage two of these short bursts in an hour over ten hours without any lasting difficulties. His hands are also sensitive to heat (which is not just a very good excuse to not do the washing up): anything above body temperature will start to burn him, so he has to be careful when handling hot dishes or in the bath. The biggest difficulty this causes him is in the sauna, something he’s not willing to give up, but that he can no longer enjoy to the extent that he once did.

AU HISTORY: Timo was born into a happy, but poor family, the only child of Elias and Sofia Väinämöinen. Even with both parents working, there was often little to go round, and by the time Timo was seven, Elias had had enough, and he simply didn’t return from work one day. Sofia waited six months for her husband to return, but unable to make rent by herself she eventually returned to live with her father, Aleksi in Turku. Aleksi adored and doted on his grandson, and while there was still little to go around, at least they were surviving.

Friendly and open, Timo settled into his new school easily. However, he surprised everyone by befriending the next new boy that arrived, despite his terrifying persona. Timo had decided that no one deserved to be alone, and so latched onto Björn. Apparently opposites attract, and Timo found himself all too easily filling the spaces left by Björn’s silence with his own chatter, and good intentions put aside, once he got to know the other boy better he admired his loyalty and quiet strength.

By this point, Aleksi was starting to get too old to keep up with Timo’s energy, so Sofia was glad to let Timo spend more and more time with Björn after school to give her father more of a break while she was at work. When Timo was invited to go with Björn to visit his half brother over summer she was delighted that Timo would finally get to have a summer trip of the kind that she’d never be able to afford for him, and quickly agreed to it. Timo, of course, was just happy to be able to spend more time with his friend.

However, Timo hated seeing Björn and his brother fight, scalding both of them like a mother hen, and when Björn took off after one bad one, Timo was right behind him. He scaled him, of course, but the consequent bicycle trip across Sweden and Finland to get home is one of his most precious memories. He did miss the summer trips over the next few years, but not as much as he missed Björn when his mother decided to move, even though they still met up in the summers.

To bring a little more money into the family and to fill up the gap left by Björn’s absence, Timo took on a waiting job after school and on weekends. It wasn’t well paid, but at least it meant that he was feeling productive, and his tips paid for frequent letters to his friend, and occasionally some sweets or gifts. He first noticed his sensitivity to heat developing late one night when he’d stayed late to help clean up. Taking a hot plate from the dishwasher to start putting them away, he yelped and dropped it, fingers already blistering. Oddly enough, though, his arms were fine with the heat, and after further similar incidents, the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with him.

Timo put it out of his mind and continued as best he could. However, all of that changed on the day that he first shot a bullet accidentally, just holding his hands together as he usually did, waiting for the bus to take him home. He was enthused by his new talent, taking time out for target practice, but Sofia was more weary and less trusting than her son, and she’d seen what had happened to other mutants in the past. It was she who arranged Timo’s place at the institute, and though he hated the idea of leaving his family and his home, he wanted to learn how to control it.

SAMPLE
1ST PERSON SAMPLE:
Does anyone know the best way to send letters from here? I need to send a letter home to Mom and my Granddad and I’m not exactly sure how it works. I mean, it’s probably more or less the same as at home, but I’d like to know just to make sure! I know I could send them an email, but it’s not the same as getting a letter, right? Besides, I can send them some sweets and things this way!

Oh, and one other thing! Is there a hockey team here at all? Because I’d really like to start playing again. I’ll try not to put anyone in hospital this time.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
Timo played with the cross around his neck as he tucked his legs up. He’d flown plenty of times before, but rarely alone, and certainly not this far. This time, though, there was no summer holidays waiting on the other side, nor was there his mother and grandfather, waiting to welcome him home with open arms, this was him flying towards a new life entirely. By accepting this part of him, there would be no turning back. But, he had reasoned, leaving it uncontrolled would just end up in disaster, and at least by controlling it he might actually be some help to someone.

“Would you like anything to drink?”

Timo glanced up at the stewardess who had dragged him out of his thoughts, and it took him a moment to process what she’d said in her cheerful, American accent. But he needed to get used to this as well, didn’t he? It was just as well that he’d been taught English in school, and already being bilingual had taken it on fairly easily. That didn’t mean that he’d had enough practice to be comfortable, unlike his Swedish. “Do you have any water?” He finally replied, giving her a smile, and her smile brightened more, relaxing him.

“Sure do, sweetie! What’s a kid like you doing, flyin’ out on your own anyway?” She asked as she poured him his drink.

So used to being called a kid, Timo glossed over that. “I’ve got a place in a school in America.” He took his drink as she held it out to him, sipping from it.

“Well that’s great! If you need anything at all, just wave me over, all right? Will you be all right when we land? Is someone meeting you?”

Now that was a bit of an underestimation of his abilities, and Timo smiled a little in amusement. “I’ll be all right, thank you. I know where I’m going, and I’m older than I look.” He caught her disbelieving look, and pulled out his passport. “I’m 17, see?” He said, pointing his birth date out for her.

“Oh, I’m sorry, hun!”

Timo shook his head, his smile staying. “Everyone thinks I’m younger.” He would have quite happily kept her chatting, but he realised that she had a job to do. “Thank you, anyway.”

“It’s fine! And the offer still stands!” She said, before she moved on, leaving Timo to sit back in his seat. He actually felt rather better about himself. He’d managed his first conversation in English out of school fine (or mostly fine), and he’d found a friend for the trip. Yes. This would go well. He’d be fine.
